Calling Time

oil on panel, 32” x 32”, 2010
“Calling Time” is the tale of Luna, a large moth that lives for only one night. Its only purpose, to find another of its kind and to mate, is so singular that it has no mouthparts – it cannot eat. The female sends out a chemical signal, the male scans with his antennae for the signal – their nocturnal search for each other is known as “The Calling Time.” If successful, the moth will be reborn to repeat the same ritual. What is the essence that carries forth from one form to another, from one being to another? What kind of creature is this – is it one or is it many? The portal is a time tunnel, an opening for transmissions between generations.
